New to fishing, want a good quality rod and reel for under $70

I fished a bit when I was a kid but went trout fishing today with some friend and we will be doing it more often. I had to borrow a rod and reel today so I need to get my own. I don't want to spend a ton of money but I want to get a good quality setup. I see a lot of people recommend an ugly stick but it seems like most of the combos have a crappy reel with them. Can you guys help me pick out a good set that should last me a while? I'm not far from a bass pro shop so that is probably where I'd get it.

We will mostly be fishing for trout and bass from canoes, rowboats and shore. My friend lent me a 7 foot rod today and it was way too long for what we were doing, everyone else had much shorter rods.
