Has anyone ever reused yeast from a dry packet (US-05 or similar) to make a yeast starter?
I've washed and reused plenty of White Labs and Wyeast strains, used the cakes for starters, and had great results. Has anyone ever done this with any of the dry yeasts? I have a cake of US-05 in a mason jar that I have harvested, as per Don Osborn's instructions. I have heard both sides of the fence on making starters with dry yeast packets, but I was wondering: Since I have the yeast in liquid form already, could I not just use it for a starter? Thoughts?
TL;DR: I'm going to make a starter using a cake of washed US-05 ale yeast. Anybody else do the same?
