LPT [request] How to use my thumb for the spacebar?

I know it's a weird one but I get around 80words/minute on 10fastfingers typing test, I don't use my thumb for the space-bar and I know how much faster I would be if i used my thumb. Any tips? it just feels uncomfortable bending my thumb sideways at a downwards angle, any little tricks to re-learn typing?
