How to breathe?

I am currently going to school to be a firefighter. I am done with the fire academy part of the school...and had one thing I constantly had a problem with. Is there any breathing techniques you guys use to conserve air when working hard during a fire. It seemed like no matter what we did, we sucked down the tanks really fast.
