How do I make girlfriends at my age? 33

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I wanted advice on making female friends. I'm really embarrassed about my situation. It seems like everyone but me has close girlfriends.

I'm really lonely. I have been going through cancer treatment, and all but one (male) friend has disappeared from my life despite my efforts to keep in touch and be positive. I lost my job just before getting sick, and I just lost my house, too. I have a chance to start with a clean slate, which is exciting, but I'd love to share the excitement with people who care.

I've tried okcupid and craigslist to make friends, with no success. I go to support groups, which I like, but at 33 I'm the youngest by 25+ years. I did make one friend on a makeup forum, but she lives about 2 hours away. Plus she is going through her own stuff and doesn't have the energy to email these days. (I think she will come back in to my life at some point but I need help now.) I met one other person a while back, but she ended up having some serious mental health issues that I couldn't deal with. I don't like to drink, so even if I was healthy, I wouldn't be going to bars/clubs.

It seems like everyone is entrenched in their lives at my age, and I just want a friend. I feel like I've lost everything, and I'm still upbeat about my future, but the current situation is depressing. How do I break in to the world of new female friendships? It's actually intimidating - seems harder than dating.
