[Suggestion] Battle Rank System Improvement
Inspired by the mention that the VS would be potentially getting an armor pass I kind of wonder why it can't be incorporated for all factions with the addition of making BR actually be something you work for and not just a nice jingle when you level up. At the moment the only thing BR is good for is unlocking of additional slots and squad leader cert tree at BR10 (in the current state). I play mainly support as medic, engineer and infiltrator on occasion; I very rarely play other classes if at all but they're there to pull if I need to deal with a problem.
There's little distinction between classes and what's your "main talent" emphasized in the fact I can be a BR48 HA one moment then a BR48 LA the next having never touched either class having played all the way to BR48 as Medic. However I think that BR could be re-imagined based on per class xp where values stay the same as they are now it just means that I have to play that class in order to progress that class BR. This should also extend to a "Faction/Global BR" stat that calculates your overall BR because most seem to like to see how they're doing on a larger scale.
So for example using values from PSU wiki this is what it should work out for my BR48:
To be a BR48 Medic I still require 2,494,500 xp in that particular class. To have a New Conglomerate Ranking of 48 I require overall 14,967,000 xp (2,494,500 x 6)
Going off current statistics and my own score of 2,551,045 xp across the board earned, this would be how my character classes would look:
- MAX: BR0
- HA: BR8
- LA: BR3
- Medic: BR28
- Eng: BR37
- Inf: BR28
- New Conglomerate / Faction / Global Ranking: BR24 (Requiring 2,364,750 as an accumulated xp score)
So what's the motivation for using a revised structure?
- Each faction has 3 non SC obtainable additional "skin/models" and "class helmets" (with suitable variants for the classes that sit outside the mainstream i.e Infiltrator and MAX) - unlocked through battle rank progression and can be equipped in the same way camo can.
- 0 - 24 base level "recruit" skin that is currently in game then every 25 level increments a new one is available to choose and pick based on your own personal taste (if you wish to).
- Rank decals are accessed/awarded per class as well - not overall faction rank.
- Cosmetics earned through progression are limited to class BR so as a BR28 Medic I have access to 2 skins; however equipping as a MAX I would still only have the default "recruit" skin.
- Camo still applies across the board regardless of class BR as it does now.
- When killed or killing it displays the class BR not the Faction BR - save that stat for the score boards.
- Opens up a new scoreboard filter for those who are interested to see "best in class".
So why bother with this?
- 1: Players who main classes are given identity as being able to use that class effectively. At the moment there's no indication as to which player plays more as a certain class or their measure of how effective they are in a particular role. This goes alittle of the way to achieving this.
- 2: Opponents are able to identify "watch out for players" within class spheres.
- 3: Gives more to work towards at a more realistic rate.
- 4: No one player is instantly a jack of all trades until he hits the Faction BR.
- 5: Gives the opportunity for unique BR earned skins which in turn gives more variety to on screen character models and a sense of being something more than "just another face on the screen".
- 6: No need for a "BR should dictate that you can pull vehicle x/equip object x" from the get go.
- 7: Allows for unique class upgrades i.e at Engi BR 50 you have access to a back pack style inventory or something unique that doesn't break the game (as a unique weapon might) however rewards you for sticking with that class.
- 8: Certs are earned in the same way they are now and you can spend them where you please - so if you enjoy playing HA but want to pick your Medic gear level up that's your prerogative. It does however mean that potentially you have "all the kit, but none of the shit" in the BR/experience side of things.
- 9: Potential to reduce 4th faction alt swapping as it takes substantial sticking power to get somewhere. This could however be a double edged sword.
- 10: Work already in game both on the BR system and cosmetically isn't time wasted as they can both be transferred.
- 11: Keeps people in game and working towards something if thats how they prefer to play the game. Sense of achievement.
- 12: Involves both the free and paying players alike; there's no "exclusiveness" factor beyond class distinction.
- 13: Players more likely to to buy SC to use the XP boosts while playing - by creating something "free" SOE encourage the sale of that side of things which in the long run they rely on.
- 14: Encourages players to pick up and maybe try a new play style from trying out a new class they previously dismissed.
So what are the potential issues this doesn't fix?
- 1: I can still get in a vehicle as class x and boost my BR with spam. Don't see any realistic way around this bar introduction of a vehicle battle rank which might just take it too far and complex.
- 2: Could feel like more grind - but really I don't see it this way because if you're maining one then why be concerned with other classes if they're not for you?
- 3: Potential upset from those that have already gained high BR - however if they mained a HA to BR100 100% from start they would still be a BR100 HA just not faction wide.
Any constructive feedback or ideas on this would be welcome to see if anyone would want this implemented or enhanced.
