Where's the manual? There must be a manual
I've posted various stories about a former place of employment. This one just came to mind and I felt the need to share.
So I was the general computer administrator (software developer who could install things).
New computer arrives for the senior developer who requires a replacement every 6 months as he doesn't delete files or defrag his drives.
So it comes in a box. That's pretty normal, so it sits on the floor for a few weeks as time isn't available.
I am tasked with setting it up. This is a pre built machine that requires plugging in and some software installing.
I open the box and take out the machine and leads. I turn to the senior developer and say "here's your new machine. I'm setting it up now ."
His eyes glance over and he says "very good. Can I read the manual?"
Being under the age of 90 I'm not sure what he means. I have a wiring diagram that says the power lead goes in the socket marked power.
He says "computers come with manuals on how to use them."
This man is a senior developer. Does he not know how to use a computer?
"No manual. I can look online if there is something specific you want though."
"I want the manual. Is it not in the box?"
I hold up the box and tip it so he can see it is empty and I have not missed his copy of how to be a dummy for dummies.
I imagined this would be the end of the story. Unfortunately not.
He loudly declares "they are useless. They forgot the fucking manual!"
Still unsure what the manual is for amd having build more machines than I can recall. I say "there is no manual."
Still unhappy with this he takes the packing slip and proceeded to call the manufacturer.
"Hello and thank you for calling cheap and nasty computers. How may I help you?"
"I've got this new computer and it has no manual!"
"Sorry Sir, what manual?"
"The big book that comes with a computer."
I can hear the girl on the phone barely holding in get laughter. "I'm sorry sir. We don't have manuals. If you need any details of your machine you can download it from our website."
"All computers come with a manual on how to use it."
"We don't issue manuals sir. If you need help learning how to use a computer you could always look for some classes in your local area."
"I know how to use it. Oh forget it!"
He then turns to me and says "they forgot the manual. I'll just download it and print it out."
I built the machine and he printed some sheets of paper he later shredded. I don't think I will ever know what he wanted.
TL;DR: mild mannered Peter Parker is actually Spider-Man.
