Chemical straightening for white guy with curly/frizzy/afro hair?

I've had a nest of random frizz and curl on my head for quite some time now, and desperately want a new style as my current one is pretty disgusting. I've tried to tame it and try and make it more curly as opposed to frizzy, but it has always ended up reverting back to a jungle of messy, frazzled hair. I've tried cutting it short as well, but it looked quite ridiculous, and most people agreed so. One time i decided to see what it looked like if i straightened it, so i did it manually with a flat iron and it was ok. I think it would look better than it did if i had it cut into a certain style.

So, would it or would it not be a good idea to get it chemically straightened? My mother had similar hair to me, albeit not quite as bad, and it worked for her. I just want to know what would be the pros and cons of someone with such messy, frizzy hair (Also, i have a fairly receding hairline. I'm not willing to get a buzzcut yet, i'm 15) getting some kind of chemical treatment.
