The phrase "Shut up" is ridiculously ineffective. Most of the time it's effect will be opposite of the intended one, and yet it's so reflexive to say.

It's kind of like trying to flush a blocked toilet. On occasion the whole thing may just flush away, most of the time you'll just get an eruption of bum-water flowing across the floor towards your feet.
