Was the Silk Road a single, continuous trade route? Or a series of smaller, regional trade routes?

To put it another way, would a merchant have travelled with his goods all the way from Aleppo to China? Or would he have sold his goods to a merchant in Tehran, who sold his goods to a merchant in Samarkand, who sold his goods to a merchant in China?
