Gaming on ubuntu?

i made the huge mistake of "upgrading" to windows 8 and i cant do many things because of it. i am thinking of getting ubuntu but am not sure how gaming is on it. -do drivers work properly and support openGL etc.? -should i use wine? or virtual machines? -is performance hindered at all (compared to windows 7)
