Education Reimbursement: Pre or Post Tax?

Hello - doing my taxes last minute here with a bunch of headache. Lesson learned to not delay next year....

So I had an education expense for $980 that I incurred in 2012. My company reimbursed me for the full amount in 2013. However, when I got my reimbursement in 2013, I only received ~$540 (after my calculating) of it after tax.

My questions are:

1. Even though I paid the education expense for $980 in 2012, can I say I was reimbursed by my company (even though I was reimbursed in 2013)?

2. If I can say I was reimbursed by my company in the 2012 tax form, would I say I was reimbursed for the $980 or for the ~$540 I actually received after tax?
