New grill/smoker! Keto friendly meat rubs?

Picked up a kamado cooker over the weekend, planning on doing some serious grilling and smoking, even though my grill experience is close to zero. I've been reading about smoking meats, and almost every guide/recipe calls for some sort of meat rub regardless of the type of meat, and the rubs all contain sugar. Can any bbq gurus comment on the 'necessity' of a meat rub for smoking & grilling, and recommend some good keto-friendly spice mixes or rubs I can try?
