Why do people think the United States of America is a democracy?

I understand that foreigners on reddit would think so, but I see post after post about America being a democracy. 'Don't like guns? Get the majority of the country to vote them away!' That being the most popular of subjects lately, and the example I'll use. We are a constitutional republic folks.
