What is a "lemming"?

I hear this term thrown around a lot, usually in the context of a teammate raging after he dies to an arty shot or something. I guess it would mean something similar to "fuk noob" or "stupid BR huehue," but I imagine that it is more nuanced than that.

So what does it mean to be a "lemming" in this game?
