Question on empire

So every time I play empire at the start of the game Louisiana and the thirteen colonies exist and are protectorates of France and Britain respectively. But within a couple turns they become a province of the mother nation. There's no war, Britain doesn't take ten years conquering America. Admittedly I've yet to play a french or British campaign so I don't know if it's scripted but does anybody have an explanation for that?
