Pine Pipes

Hey guys, I'm making a wooden pipe for a friend for his graduation present and I have a question over what type of wood to use. Would a pipe from a pine tree branch be functional? I did some googling and the most often used woods aren't present in my area, so I'm checking with my fellow ents to see if you guys and girls could spread some knowledge on the subject. I have plentiful pines, oaks, and maples, are there any other midwest trees that'd make good pipes? Thanks!
