I have no idea what I am doing

Greetings gardening people (:

I finally have a walk-up apartment with a small deck area. I was thinking I could put some small boxes for veggies and herbs. Everything I'm finding seems to be aimed at people who have yards, but I only have a 9x7' space to work with and no ground to dig in. Ideally Id keep my costs and time investment low, but I dont mind putting in a few hours to get things started. I don't want to put anything really expensive out because it is accessible to the street.

I'd like to try for sugar snap peas, cherry tomatoes, kale or lettuce, tiny cucumbers, radishes, garlic, rosemary, chives and the etc herbs. Maybe some no-maintenance flowers to make things pretty. I have no idea if any of those things are seasonal or hard to take care of T_T

If someone could point me in the right direction on how to get started that would be really, really awesome!
