Question about SRing in Pokemon emerald. (no need to upvote)

Couple of questions. I know in heart gold and soul silver you can preview weather or not the Pokemon is shiny before you pick it. Is that possible in any other game? Emerald in particular? Also I'm currently SRing for a shiny mudkip in my emerald version. I am saved right in front of the bag to pick a Pokemon to save prof. Birch. Is this too late of a save? Like do I have to save earlier on in order for it to be a shiny? Feedback is much appreciated.
