What are the scientific/psychological reasons that religious fundamentalists can be so hypocritical?

The most pervasive example being some religious politicians hating and persecuting gay people, but being gay themselves. I mean, I know the religious aspect already has them in the mindset of evading reality, but is it as simple as that? I want to hear from people who have professional knowledge about this kind of phenomenon. Thanks, Reddit!
