The Current State of LoL: Pro-Based Meta (Good or Bad?)
Okay, so I'm sure this specific topic has been brought up before, but I want to see the current opinion on this (I just got into an argument with someone about it, so I'd like some external input). This is my first submission to the LoL sub-reddit, so I apologize for any formatting/rule-based mistakes. WARNING: Quite the long read, I'll add a TL;DR at the end for you lazy people
Every time you log into League and queue up, you're prepared to either fill a role (usually support) or call a lane. Let's say, for example, you call top and get you lane, while everyone else calls their respective lanes. So now on your team there is a top bruiser/tank, mid lane ap caster, a jungle, a support, and an ad carry. You start the game, and as a top lane bruiser/tank, you go with the usual 1 Fort Pot/4 HP/1 Ward. Everyone else goes with their accepted starting builds.
Now, let's stop here, and assess what just happened. Everything so far in this specific game you queued for, has been a rinse and repeat process created by Professional players. Everyone called their respective lanes, lanes and roles that Professionals have caluclated to be the best fit. Even the items you start with have been decided to be the best possible option by professionals and thus, the majority of people. Let's continue this imaginary game for a minute, in regards to that support in bot lane. He currently has 2 CS, both of them accidental autoattacks. The ADC must have been in a bad mood, because he's yelled in all caps to the support to stop stealing his CS. What I'd describe as happening here, is that the accepted tactic for support (also developed within the professional scene) is that a support should always have 0 CS early game, to maximize the ADC's ability. Sometimes, if you break that accepted "meta", people get angry. This is the same for champion select, if you want to go duo top or dual jungle, people get angry with you sometimes. They'd rather have the more comfortable solo top and solo jungle, and that losing a support to help duo jungle would be a lost game. If you did start the game with this kind of team comp, some people would even try to flame you the entire game and report you afterwards for some silly thing.
Of course, this whole situation is an imaginary game to assist with making my point. While this singular game I genernated in my head was my own creation, games like this happen in large multitudes every day. There is this "meta", this singular structure, that all must follow, otherwise it's game over for your team. Roles, starting items and late-game builds, responsibilities, all of these are under a certain structure that you can sometimes add onto a little bit, but you can't change the structure itself. Or, you could try.
Even when it comes to balancing, the Pro-scene is where the balances come from. My best example (I'm not too much into watching the pros myself) is the massive nerf to Olaf due to Voyboy's performance with him. Even if this isn't the best example, many balance changes are usually in regards to how well those champions perform in the pro-scene, or based on the average of all games.
TL;DR Almost everything you do in the average 45 minute League of Legends match on Summoners Rift is based on the same skeleton, or "meta". Many accept it without question, hell, I even do it myself.
Now, here's the part I'd like to ask you: Do you think that this wide acceptance of the "professional meta" is overall a good thing, or harmful thing, for the game?
Answer with your honest opinion, as I'd like to see all sides of this topic.
