Need help with amp & sub compatibility questions.

I have a Kenwood Excelon X500-1 amp, and I'm trying to figure out if it'll be enough to push a single Rockford Fosgate 12" P3 in an non-ported box.

It's going to be put in a 2010 Mazda 3 hatchback, so I know it'll sound decent, I just want that extra boom boom. I had 2 of the P3's hooked up in my old explorer with a 1000 watt amp, and it just about beat the doors off. But that amp blew and I no longer have the explorer, so I don't feel like I need that huge box in my trunk.

Will the amp be sufficient enough to push the sub? And would you recommend a ported or non-ported box? Any other tips or tricks you could suggest are appreciated!
