completing the pokedex

i am a first generation pokemon player and grew up with pokemon most of my life . now that i happen to have some spare time , and inspired by the redditor that actually completed the pokedex and posted here his storage boxes , i want to ask : which generation pokemon games would i have to play in order to do the same , since trading between all of them is not possible ? thank you reddit !
