Audience size and nerves

Last Sunday I performed in front of 80 or so and I was fairly relaxed and felt like I did well- didn't stammer or freeze up, and it was mostly new material. Then Thursday night I got up at another open mic, which only had an audience of about 12, and I completely locked up and bombed.

Anyone else feel more comfortable in front of larger groups? Any advice for dealing with small crowds?
