MUA, do all of those mascaras that advertise different effects really work?

I went shopping today, and I couldn't help but notice all the ones that said things like "volumising" or "curling" or thickening, or lengthening, or whatever. Is it just a difference in what the brush looks like? Do they actually work as advertised? If you own some, would you mind taking a before and after picture to show it actually works? I'm interested to find out.
