Recruitment: Getting the Contract You Want

Hey r/military,

I'm meeting with a recruiter for the first time this coming week. I've been in the system for a while as a potential enlistee and have been in and out of contact with my local recruitment station (Army) over the past few months. I've gotten things sorted out here at home and I've decided the time is right for me to begin the enlistment process. I recently spoke to my recruiter over the phone and he indicated that the contract that he knows I am interested in (18X) is not as available as it was a few months ago (ie. choose something else). I've heard from others that an 18X contract is relatively easy to get (even with the current sequester and defense spending cuts) and it may just be my recruiter attempting to squeeze me somewhere he may need me. Does this seem plausible? If so, how should I approach this process if I still want to get 18X. If he's feeding me a crock of shit, should I be headstrong with him up front? I don't want to strain my relationship with person who can or cannot make my recruitment a nightmare. I don't want to piss off my recruiter and have him drag ass throughout the recruitment process because he really doesn't care for me. I know a lot of this is supposition and I'm sorry if I'm off base. I'm just trying to wrap my head around the best way to go about this. Thanks for any help. I am a longtime lurker and I can say with full confidence that this subreddit is awesome!
