Why does Planned Parenthood require government funding? Couldn't a non-profit sex education center stay open without government support?

I admit I don't know much about this issue, but I do know non-profit charities/hospitals like St. Jude's are able to function on donations from other companies and ordinary citizens. People have been known to donate money for all sorts of things (just go look at Kickstarter for proof), so couldn't a center to prevent teen pregnancies gain enough support to be fully funded?
