Do enthusiasts have any advice on shipping a bike, or flying with it?

I'm going to LA from NY for the summer for work. I don't drive, so this is going to suck quite a bit. That said having my bike would help a lot. Does anybody have any advice on the best way to get by jam across the country? Thanks y'all.
