Question about paycheck deductions.

Today I walked into work to find a note hanging on the bulletin board where our schedule hangs. Apparently the night before our cash register was about fifty dollars short(I work a minimum wage job in a restaurant which is why there is only one). The note said that the employees from the night before would split the loss. This doesn't seem legal to me, but if someone with a little more knowledge of law could help me out that would be great.
