My new iPod Touch lags terribly?

It's brand new, with hardly anything on it. It lags so badly that there is no possible way to play any sort of game, especially ones structured like Temple Run and Fruit Ninja. Besides that, though, it's extremely annoying to use because of it. What can I do to fix it?
