Extending the floor/ceiling instead of a wall for letters in second or third cycle?

For example, the letter X: http://i.imgur.com/E4WiSiD.png

In black, is normal (how it's taught on ccelian.com). But instead of extending one of the walls, could you extend the floor (like in red?)

If not, why not?
