For Chicago Whovians - a pretty hysterical Doctor Who-themed burlesque.
Last night, I went to see "Don't Blink: A Doctor Who Burlesque," a live burlesque being performed every Friday until May 31st at the Gorilla Tango Theatre at Western & Milwaukee.
Assuming that a burlesque is something you can enjoy, I can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone. The play was structured with an intense affection for the source material, is densely packed with in-jokes and respect of canon details, and was utterly hysterical throughout its entire hour-long length.
It featured the Sixth, Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh Doctors; Amy, Donna, Rose, and Sarah Jane; and the Master, Ood, Cybermen, Menoptera, Daleks, and Weeping Angels.
It starts with Eleven realizing she's now a woman, and her and Amy meeting up with her former incarnations. The Doctors do impressive jobs of channeling their roles; Ten in particular does a stellar job of channelling Tennant.
For added comedy, the show is done within the framework of a PBS pledge drive. :)
While the women are of course not hard on the eyes, the show's primary assets (pardon the pun) lie in the deeply solid comedy and in its love of its subject matter.
Anyway, I highly recommend it! (I am in no way associated with the show. Just laughed myself silly, that's all.)
I don't want the mods to interpret this as spam, so I'm purposefully not putting any sort of ticket link in here. If you're a Chicagoan, just do a tiny bit of Googling and you'll land on the ticket page quick enough.
