I just discovered I've been doing dutch braids, not french braids, my entire life. I blame my left-handedness. Anyone else?
I have very long hair and often braid it straight back, to the side, up, etc. I get complimented on my braids a lot and have braided others' hair at their request.
I have always noticed how braids look a bit different on different people, but I always attributed it to hair type or texture. One of my friends told me today she saw a picture of something called a dutch braid--I googled it, and lo and behold that's what I do. I have very fine hair and prefer a looser look, so when I do braid it it isn't tight and "sticking up" like a lot of the dutch braid photos I am now seeing.
I just did a french braid for the first time ever to my sister-in-law and it took all my concentration to put the hair under and not over. I don't think I could do it to myself.
I'm not upset (though I did tell her jokingly that I felt I had been living a lie) but I am really feeling it is attributed to my left-handedness and am wondering if anyone else has noticed something similar. I am very left-dominant--writing, eating, sports, everything I do is with my left hand/foot. I find it pretty fascinating that at my age (mid twenties) I am still discovering new things about being left handed!
