New to Drag race, finished season 1 (and season 15 but this post is mostly about season 1) (Please no spoilers about other seasons/all star seasons)
So first, I really don't know anything about drag, know any drag names, nothing. I literally only know Rupaul from the show and nothing of what they accomplished before it or even during it other than the show.
So I just finished season 1, and man, it is very different compared to season 15 (I watched 15 first cause it was the default one on Paramount+ and I couldn't figure out how to switch seasons, #TeamAnetra btw but Sasha Colby deserved her win)
So my thoughts:
I thought the first 3 eliminations were perfect, no complaints there.
The main issue with this season lies Rebecca, for me, and I imagine most people (IDK, I have literally no idea what the drag race fandom thinks).
Rebecca should have either been fifth or sixth and Jade being fifth or sixth. Rebecca somehow won the top 5 challenge although I thought she did the worst job, so there's that. Bebe, Nina, Shanel, and Ongina were easily the strongest 4 there (in my opinion). Personally, I would have done Nina as the winner, Bebe as runner-up, Ongina as third, and Shanel as fourth (but Ongina and Shanel could really go either way).
Was Rebecca being humiliated in the finale worth eliminating Shanel and Ongina early? No, but it certainly softened the blow.
This next part to explain, I'm a big fan of America's Next Top Model, and if you are, maybe you feel the same way I do. But I had to agree with Shanel's outburst about always being negatively critiqued, and how she could do no right. It heavily reminded me of Kelle from ANTM's season 3 where there's nothing she can do right according to the judges, and keeps getting strung along in the competition to get her to break down on national television. Her critiques also really reminded me of the worthless ANTM critiques judges gave. "You don't show vulnerability" like what is that bullshit.
As for season 15, I really only have 2 critiques The first one is that Spice overstayed hard, and I would have wished Aura replaced her in her spot. Season 15 had the perfect top 5. I would have accepted Loosey's, Mistress', and Luxx's elimination at top 5 as I felt only Anetra and Sasha had 100% secured finale spots by their performance throughout the competition.
As for my second critique, as was said, it really did feel like the Sasha Colby Meet & Greet. So as an ANTM fan, it was really surprising that they had this well-known drag queen that every other queen knew entered the competition and it really just feels unfair, I suppose. I guess that's why I just had to root for the underdog Anetra (at least an underdog when compared to Sasha Colby). But yeah, it almost felt rigged for Sasha Colby's success just like the winner of ANTM cycle 10/15, if you know, you know.
Sorry, I just had to get that out of my system.
