2011 Volkswagen Golf is telling me to release parking brake but parking brake is down

Hi everyone. I just started having this issue with my 2011 Volkswagen Golf on April 30th. Once I start driving there is a constant annoying beeping noise that doesn’t stop until I brake at a stop light or come to a complete stop. On the dash it reads “Release parking brake!” however the parking brake is down. I took it to the mechanic for him to troubleshoot and at first he thought he would have to replace the part that connects my e-brake to my back tire (not sure what it’s called) but he said instead it’s a wiring issue that would have to be troubleshooted. He would have to disconnect a wire, drive it and see if the beeping stops and repeat. I’m wondering if anyone has ever experienced this problem and how they got it fixed? I’m at a loss here and the beeping noise is driving me crazy.
