how to know if i successfully declared my items?

went to italy and bought designer. returned to SFO. i went to passport control and mentioned i had goods to declare and they asked me how much and what (i answered, value is a few thousand). they made me go to a luggage inspection officer. the luggage inspection officer knew my name (seemed like passport control told them about me), but the officer didn’t ask me anything about my goods, just questions about my visa status, and told me i could go. i’m confused if i should have mentioned that i had stuff to declare? i don’t want to get fined lol.
