Traveling with a Wheelchair. Advice needed

Question

I am having major surgery out of state in 2 weeks. I will be taking my own wheelchair, but have never traveled with it before. Is it better to check it in at counter/gate and use the airport/airline wheelchair, or is it better to use my own wheelchair and have them store it when I board my flight?

I will be very limited in my movement ( abdominal surgery) my family will be traveling with me as well. Any advice is appreciated.
