Watching the. X Men Movies For the First Time: Part 1 X Men (2000)
Hey everyone,
As someone with no knowledge of the X Men outside of the few episodes of the animated series I watched as a child, I’ve always been curious to watch these movies, but never got the chance. Now, as a young adult with not much going on in my life right now, I figured I’d start this, a challenge to watch one every day until it’s finished.
Review of X Men (2000)
Pros: I was pleasantly surprised by the acting and the overall storytelling in this film. I now understand why this movie launched Hugh Jackman as a star. The friendship/feud between Xavier and Magneto was compelling. A standout moment was when Logan called Erik out on not being the one to sacrifice himself for the cause and instead sacrificing Rogue. Ian Mckellan brilliantly portrayed the look in his eyes of his beliefs being challenged. I also loved the characterization of Scott. He didn’t have a huge role in this one, but his speech to the unconscious Xavier was a great moment. I hope to see him in a bigger role throughout the sequels. The mentorship between Logan and Rogue was special to see, and finally, the villains were honestly understandable, including the humans. You can understand where everyone is coming from, and you can also understand the flaws in their logic.
Cons: As I expected, a lot of the special effects didn’t age all that well, some making it difficult to watch. I felt like it was a little rushed and some of the characters lacked proper motivation. Also, what the hell was that storm/road line at the end?
Overall, I’d say I really enjoyed this movie. It was a good start to a blockbuster saga, and definitely set the stage for bigger things.
Predictions: I predict that at some point eh professor will die, and Scott will become the leader of the X Men. Logan will discover who he is and take on a more hero type of role, and Magneto will turn good and help the X Men.
Onto X2! I will post my review of the second one tomorrow.
