Need help with a term
Hello,
I am currently iterating and testing aspects of my future 2D RPG game, and there is a particular aspect that I've not seen in many games that I really wanted to include. And while I have had no issue searching the internet other aspects or gameplay elements, I cannot find the proper way to search for this one, and I do not know how it is truly called.
In non-game application, a large raster map can be cached in different levels, so you can be fully zoomed-out and slowly zoom in to a spot, and the resolution will change at specific points to have a more detailed map.
Now imagine this in a game, but with 3 distinct scales. Overworld map (little detail, roads, rivers, major cities or villages, and markers ofc). Regional map (With more detail, like villages, dungeons, and perhaps moving armies etc) and finally, local map, which has everything gameplay wise, and it's the only scale were non-dialogue interactions happen. No random generation after development finishes, everything map-wise will have been created, so it feels more "real" in a way.
I would like the interaction (zoom-in/zoom-out) to be seamless, and at the control of the player almost all of the time. If they want, they can never zoom-out fully, or they can choose their level at their heart's desire.
How would this element be called? Is there even a name? Is there a game that does it?
