Vehicle speed sensor, some information.

Question regarding why honda would make this sort of change?

On the 2022 cb300r looking at the diagrams the bike has a vehicle speed sensor [ hallmark sensor ] on the right side of the crank case just above the clutch housing. This sensor is the primary sensor for displaying your speed on the speedometer and is read directly off the counter shaft in the transmission.

On the updated 2023 cb300r after many years, all of a sudden they have removed the vehicle speed sensor from the countershaft and replaced it with a simple plug to cover the hole as it's no longer used. The diagrams now show that the primary speed for the speedometer is read of the front and rear wheels, some average algorithm is used to calculate speed front both wheels.

This means on 2023 and after any sprocket or tire changes will not effect your speedo readings which is a good thing, but why after so many years running a dedicated speed sensor off the counter shaft they have decided its no longer needed? Is it a cost cutting strategy?
