The new iOS app experience
Overall, it’s fine. It’s a rough non-native app experience that is a downgrade. Some of the UI is better. Most of the UX is worse. Day trading functionality took a backseat to “wealth management“ and upselling opportunities.
I don’t blame you. This is what happens when you have a company that does mobile as a side-project, is in a very change resistant industry, is stuck with legacy code, won’t pay for mobile talent, designs by committee, and neglects interactivity of the app.
Here are my prioritized issues:
1. Navigating to options
I open a symbol’s quote. I select options (which is hidden by a tap of the navigation title). And it makes me retype the symbol.
Where did the table of options prices go? Why’s it difficult to find options? This is the worst regression and makes me want to use a different brokerage.
2. Views blank out when refreshing and navigating
Pull to refresh is jarring. Navigating backward is jarring when it initiates a refresh. I get that you’re probably using some janky web-adjacent technology here to save on native development, but this is an awful experience.
Heck, the year tabs on the tax info view cause the tab bar to momentarily disappear. I love this new view, but who thought this UX was acceptable?
2.a. My Home view got stuck blank and I had to kill the app. This wouldn’t happen if the app’s refresh mechanism weren’t so awkward.
3. Can’t scroll when touch down on a chart or control.
Touch down on a graph or tab bar, can’t scroll down. This is not a problem that native apps have. It’s amateurish that you didn’t catch it before forcing this update on us.
4. This ridiculous profile/options button cluster in the upper right
It wastes space. The push navigation doesn’t make sense on each tab.
It ought to be where this useless Discover tab is. I can only imagine this Discover tab exists because of some product manager.
5. No visual feedback when tapping
Again, because it’s clear this isn’t a native app anymore. Rows used to change color.
6. No swipe to go back on many views
I assume mostly because this is non-native development, but also because the gesture interferes on some views and controls.
When I did get one to work, it wasn’t interactive. Pretty weak.
Concluding remarks
I could go on about how the scroll views don’t all bounce consistently, the complete avoidance of iOS translucency, or the janky animations. Really, it’s kind of pathetic that a company like Fidelity can’t do significantly better at iOS design than my credit union. 🔥
