I made my gf my whole life, and then she cheated on me and I have nothing left that matters
I was a late bloomer. When I was 23, I was mentally and emotionally where I should have been at 16. My classmates and coworkers never liked me (I don't blame them) and I missed out on so much sitting alone in my parents' basement playing video games that I didn't even enjoy.
Then things got better. I went back to school, got a trades diploma and dumb lucked into a really good job immediately. I lost 30lbs, paid more attention to my clothing and hygiene and was making 6 figures. There was two big problems remaining. I didn't have any friends, and the job was a 2 week fly in/fly out rotational job which meant I didn't live near any coworkers and I was away from home a lot.
I fell into a pattern. I'd meet a girl (usually on dating apps) and try to cram as many dates as possible as I could before I had to go back to work. She'd become my best friend, my companion for everything. My social life would be built around her friends, I'd never get invited anywhere on my own so I relied on her to bring me along. And then when she'd get tired of that and we'd break up, I'd be starting over again. I moved cities several times post-breakup (it's a fly-in job so I can live anywhere).
I knew that wasn't a healthy foundation for a relationship, but I really thought I had it this time. I met an amazing woman. I was 34 and she was 25, which made me a little uncomfortable, but we had an incredible connection. Our first date started with a 2pm coffee and we talked until 3am. Within a few weeks, we were spending every single night together. She was bubbly and outgoing and had so many friends and they seemed to like me. We talked all day every day, we traveled together, we met each others families, we were trying to buy a house, she moved in, we were together 2.5 years, we were talking about children. And then, one month ago, she left me. For her boss. Over the phone, at midnight, while I was out of town working a night shift. We were texting and then she just stopped responding to my messages out of the blue. I called her, I emailed, I contacted her friends asking if anybody had heard from her, she just disappeared. After 8 hours of silence I called the police, it was 10:30 at night and I was terrified. That's apparently what prompted her to confess, she heard the cops were looking for her and admitted she was at his place.
I'm 37 years old, I can't start over again. I know I've still got lots going for me, I've got money saved up and I'm reasonably good looking and I'm not the social idiot I once was, but I thought I was there. I had exactly what I wanted. We were working with a realtor, I was hoping to have a house bought by the end of summer and I was going to propose when we sealed the deal. With a bit of luck, a baby would be on the way in 2025. Now I'm thinking of moving to I-don't-even-know-where, because I'm absolutely miserable here, everything reminds me of her and it's awkward meeting new people and having to explain that I've lived here 5 years but have zero friends because everybody I knew was through my exes and I lost custody of them when we broke up.
People keep telling me to join a club or get a hobby. My work schedule makes most team things impossible, and I don't want a damn hobby. I have no interest in rock climbing or board games or anything like that, I just want a good group of normal people I can get coffee/beers with and then cuddle with my woman in front of the TV afterwards. I want to be a husband and a dad, I want to host a barbecue, I want to do non-competitive bar trivia every once in a while. I was so close to that life and now I feel impossibly far away from it. Maybe I'll never get that close again.
