Mix versus Lasagna
I'm running a bunch of experiments right now and one of those is Mixed spawn/sub versus Lasagna/Layered spawn/sub.
I took a bag of substrate I made, large enough to do 4 6qt tubs. Using two jars of spawn, one Blue Meanie branded nats and one NSS from a swap print I set them to 4 tubes. In two of the tubs I put in substrate and then mixed in half a quart of spawn of each strain. Then covered with a casing layer. In two of the tubs I put in substrate, packed it down, put in the spawn and spread it evenly. Then covered with a casing layer.
The tubs were then placed in a larger tub that has a bit of distilled water in the bottom. The tubs do get active FAE every 8 hours with a exhaust fan on a timer as well as bit of mist.
No they're not flat or even, it's a PITA working in a smallish SAB. :)
