Social Security wants me to pay back death benefits.

so for context, my dad passed away in 2020 — i was 15. i was supposed to get social security benefits up until i graduated high school, which i did end up getting. we got $900 a month for me. i graduated in june of 2023, and i didn’t get the benefits after that.

i had a part time job until high school was done, and i only made $9000 in total from january to june of 2023. after i graduated i went full time and ended up making $29,000 for the year in total.

i got a letter the other day from social security stating i owed them $4,505. apparently they want me to pay back all of the death benefits i got in 2023 because i made more than $26,000 that year, even though i only made that much AFTER i was finished with the benefits. i’m livid. What do I do?
