From Confident Performer to Shy Professional: How Do I Regain My Confidence?
Hi ! I’m looking for advice on overcoming shyness and regaining my confidence. Back in school, I was a confident person who loved dancing, singing on stage, and participating in quiz shows (some even aired on TV). I thrived in the spotlight.
But somewhere along the way, things changed. Now, I’m incredibly shy, and it’s starting to impact both my work and social life. Recently, I built a groundbreaking application at my company—something that’s never been done before—but I couldn’t bring myself to showcase it to my peers. While others can harp about a very small achievement at work, I keep doubting if what I’ve done is really worth showcasing. I’m constantly wondering if I’m really worth it, if my work is good enough, if I can answer questions about the project, and if people will take me seriously.
It’s not just at work; even in gatherings with friends, I tend to retreat into my shell. I hardly talk and just smile awkwardly at whatever others say.
I find it difficult to make conversation at office parties, I don’t talk much during office lunches, and I don’t drink. This shyness is affecting my ability to build a network, gain visibility, and get promoted.
How can I overcome this shyness and regain my confidence? Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for reading.
