How much do I need to know about bioinformatics

NSFWcareer question

I am contemplating a carter shift and want to know how in depth bioinformatics is.

Currently I have a master's degree in plant biotechnology. We did some bioinformatics as a single module in my genetics undergraduate. I am thinking of doing a PhD in genetics and would like to add bioinformatics skills to my CV through my PhD as well.

I have seen that there are bioinformatics undergraduate degrees, short courses, masters and PhD's. I am not sure what level I would fit into with my genetics history. Would I need a whole new BSc, can I do another masters or are there PhD programmes that can accommodate that I don't have the bioinformatics foundation I need?

I do know some basic bioinformatics, the type of things you would see on a Udemy course for geneticists, but not much more.
