my bf gets upset when i hang out with my close male friend one on one ?? but says he trusts me?? idk
my bf (20M) of 3 months now and i (20F) are going LDR and i have been taking it not too badly as i am a pretty independent person and i trust him completely. he is not taking it as well but is trying and i admire that. he luckily is not very controlling and i can go out with my friends, wear what i want usually without any backlash. he is also very sweet and caring and perfect in every way other than this issue.
we met at college and hang out a lot and he usually drives me to places like the airport etc since i don’t have a car. i have a lot of friends just cause im pretty social and about 1/2 of them are men. my best friend is a boy who knows my parents, i know his etc and has always been there for me. he has a girlfriend and we have never had any sort of relationship even before he did. i’ve known him for 2 years as well. when it came time for me to go to the airport, my bf was out of town and so i was planning to stay at my guy best friends family home near our college from like 11-3am and then he would drive me to the airport (since my bf couldn’t). my bf has met him, and likes him and knows that i spend a lot of time with that friend group. i was in the pool with him for like 1 hour just sitting and talking about life- nothing happened nor would it as there is no reason to and because i am adamant on loyalty in relationships. i also am not attracted to my friend lol. i get back to my phone and my bf is extremely upset with me for “not responding to his calls and being alone in a pool with a man for an hour”. he continued to refer to him as “a man” or a “random boy” even though he is someone he knows and is one of my best friends, and i hate that he does that to make the situation sound bad. i told him in the future i would send him a text if i was going to be away from my phone for a long time and who i was with for safety purposes and to keep him in the loop. that seemed reasonable.
fast forward us now on summer break at our respective houses and i am about to move to the other side of the country. i have lived here for incredibly long and have about a month left of living here so i am trying to spend as much possible time as i can with all of my hometown childhood friends. i have spent a lot of nights crying over moving and am not taking it well, and my bf has seen this and knows how important my friends are to me. most of my friends here are boys, and only about 3 are girls (our town isn’t the best girl wise).
currently, all 3 of my girl friends are out of town. i had plans to hang out with two of my guy friends who are brothers and probably some of my closest friends. i texted my bf to make him aware and he was understanding and didn not give me any negative feedback, so i was VERY HAPPY because i was scared for him to respond. then one of the brothers decided he was not going to join us so it was just me and one of them alone. we were at his family’s house that had a pool and his mom was home etc.
later that night my bf is calling me on the phone and we are doing our nightly routine of “how was your day etc what did you do etc” which i normally love. i mentioned that i was in the pool with just one of the guys which , i admit, i should have texted him that it wasn’t two of them any more (and i told him that was my fault and i would do better to include all details in the future). he immediately becomes upset and is saying things like “hmmm i don’t like that” “that’s weird” and saying how no girl he knows hangs out with men other than their boyfriends. overall just very negative feedback and he made me feel bad about spending time with my friends.
for context, my bf claims he fully trusts me. i do not believe this because i see no issue in me hanging out with a guy friend. i am in a relationship and that means the only man that i want a relation with further than friendship is my boyfriend- plain and simple. i have never had a history of cheating (although my ex did cheat on me but i have healed from that) and have given him no reason to not trust me.
i am very infepending and very social, but i also take pride in my loyalty and trustworthiness. i feel smothered by this and don’t know what to say but i just believe that a relationship where you cannot hang out with a friend without being scared of your partner making you feel bad isn’t healthy. i trust him 100% and would have no issue with him spending time with a girl friend who he has told me about - ESPECIALLY if he was in my situation moving away from my childhood town.
please help idk what to do
