Tired of Apple Macbooks. Please Help W/ Laptop Suggestions.

I'm sick and tired of Apple macbooks. I bought my dad a macbook air a few years ago & it lasted maybe 2 years before it completely shut off, it wouldnt power on with a charger and it never turned back on. Apple & Best Buy told us it was not repairable and we I had to give him my old one. I upgraded with a Macbook Pro in 2019 & suddenly my charging ports are out & Apple wants to charge me $600!!!!! to repair. Just feels like they're trying to squeeze $$ out of me!

I'm debating on just getting it repaired or just taking the L and getting a new laptop, but i'm looking for some serious recommendations for laptops that aren't Apple. I'm a grad student and have LOTS of papers to write and readings to do if that matters. Other than that I use my laptop mostly for entertainment (netflix, etc).
