Right now, I'm writing this from a hospital bed.
Maybe out of desperation to try to preserve the only shred of sanity I have.
Maybe because I want to report this to the police.
Maybe because I'm scared.
It all started 2 weeks ago.
I had just started my winter vacation and this year in particular I didn't feel like traveling (like I usually do every year).
So since I had just turned eighteen, my mother let me stay home for the next few days and take advantage of the time to relax in a hotel, since she worked too much.
First of all, I want to state here that I'm not a completely sane person.
I've been diagnosed with mental disorders since I was twelve, and I was recently diagnosed with psychosis, which makes me have visual, auditory and even tactile hallucinations.
That said, I'm not surprised (and I don't blame them) that people don't believe me. But let's see: I was on medication.
I had been under treatment for over a year, and I hadn't had any psychotic episodes for about that same amount of time.
What I saw... What I went through... I swear. Believe me. There is NO WAY my mind was playing a trick on me.
Back to the situation.
I was home alone, happy to be able to sleep whenever I wanted, wake up whenever I wanted, and binge-watch my good old series for as long as I wanted.
It had been about 3 days since my mother went to the hotel, and up until then I was dealing with all this solitude very well.
Until the fourth day it happened.
I was in the living room (as usual) watching my favorite series. When suddenly I felt that sensation.
You must have felt that sensation before.
Before going to sleep
In the shower
Even when changing clothes.
That sensation that burns your skin, makes your hair stand on end and makes you break out in a cold sweat.
I was being watched.
Which didn't make any sense, because I lived on the second floor of a building, which, although not very high, had no way of climbing up to the window.
My door was locked, and I was the only one inside the house.
Since this wasn't that unusual for me (because of the hallucinations), I decided to take a shower and go to bed, sleep to see if it would pass.
Having said that, I did it.
I remember being in my bed, completely wrapped up, almost asleep, as I slowly closed my eyes, immersing my vision in the darkness of my room, I heard.
knock, knock, knock
Knocking.
Knocking too close to be the front door.
Someone was knocking on my bedroom door.
I stood still for a few seconds, paying attention to the silence in the room after the knocks, hearing only my breathing quicken, and feeling my hands get cold.
As time passed, I calmed down because I didn't hear anything else.
“It must be all in my head,” I thought.
Because it usually was.
It had to be.
With that happening, I went to sleep. After that, 4 days passed.
I was doing my normal routine every day, when at night, the same feeling of being watched attacked me again. And again I went to take a shower and go to sleep.
Now, one thing that I found strange is that I was taking my medication correctly. And I wasn't supposed to have seizures.
And even if I did, my seizures are intense, they wouldn't stop at a mere auditory hallucination, they go all the way.
But I made the big mistake of ignoring it.
When I lay down in bed, again, about to fall asleep
I hear
And my blood runs cold.
knock, knock, KNOCK
The knock.
This time slightly louder.
And again, too close to be someone at the front door.
Someone is knocking on my bedroom door.
With my heart beating a thousand times a minute, I listened carefully, to make sure again that it wasn't just my imagination, my mind playing a nasty trick on me, as it always did.
But this time I heard something, and God, how I wished I hadn't heard it.
It was breathing. Other than my own.
You know when you're with your friends, and you're doing some physical effort, and when you stop, even if you're dying, you look at each other and laugh in between your labored breathing?
That's it. That was breathing.
I swallowed hard.
Staring at the ceiling, not daring to look at the door, or even move.
I closed my eyes and counted to one hundred.
95 96 97 98 99 100.
When I finished counting, I couldn't hear anything.
I decided to go to sleep, tomorrow I would call my mother, maybe she'll decide to come back early.
And so I did.
The next day, very early, I called my mother and told her what was happening. As always, she tried to calm me down, reminding me to take my medication, even though I insisted that I was taking it every day.
But since I didn't want to take her away from her (well-deserved) vacation, I decided to let it go.
Three days passed until the day.
The day of the incident.
The day that made me here, writing this.
It was night.
Dawn.
About three in the morning.
I was having insomnia, but I decided to sleep anyway because I needed to regulate my sleep (since classes would start again soon).
So I got ready and went to bed.
This time I wasn't almost asleep.
I wasn't disoriented. Much less relaxed. And I didn't have the feeling of being watched.
Until ᴋɴᴏᴄᴋ ᴋɴᴏᴄᴋ ᴋɴᴄᴏᴋ
Little knocks.
Almost inaudible
Little knocks that if I were relaxed would go unnoticed.
Little knocks so soft that they were disturbing.
That day I gathered courage, and finally went.
I got out of bed, opened the door to my room and looked.
No one.
The house was completely silent.
Nothing at the door.
Nothing in the living room Not in the kitchen Bathroom Even in my mother's room.
Nothing.
That calmed me down, after all, it was really all in my head.
Calmer, I went back to my room, but already knowing that I wouldn't be able to sleep.
Having said that, I turned on the light in my room and sat on my bed, trying to distract myself with videos and some games, I even did my makeup and took some pictures.
When it hit 4 in the morning I heard
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK
“HONEY?!?!? “ “HONEY, OPEN THE DOOR HERE NOW, FOR GOD'S SAKES”
It was my mother’s voice.
I was clearly confused, she was supposed to arrive in 4 days, and it was even stranger that she had arrived at this time.
But naturally, I went to open the door.
What confused me more than her surprise arrival was her hugging me tightly while the police entered my house.
“Mom?!?? Mom??! What’s going on?? Are you okay? What happened???? “
My mother, with tears in her eyes, still holding me tightly as she guided me down the stairs to her car, asked;
“Are you okay? Are you hurt?? Oh my God.”
And I, even more confused, had no words to say, I just looked at her with confusion and a little despair at noticing her look of complete terror.
A while later, about 30 minutes, she had put me in the car and driven to a 24-hour bakery. I didn’t ask any more questions until she calmed down, I remained silent, until the silence was broken.
“oh darling... I will never leave you alone again. “
“Mom, just tell me what happened please, you’re scaring me.”
After saying that, she explained to me that the day I called, she thought it was just my imagination and didn’t even worry, but earlier that night, she had a bad feeling and decided to look at the cameras in my house, which could see the living room, the kitchen and part of the service area.
She kept looking and looking until she noticed.
The day the knocking started, I had gone downstairs earlier to buy some snacks to watch TV.
I usually leave the door open, especially because the store is right below my house, so it takes at most 5 minutes for me to come back.
The worst happened then.
A man.
Tall, pale, and wearing shabby clothes, came into my house and hid in the service area.
He had been hiding there the whole time.
Watching me, laughing at me.
She said that as soon as she saw this, she called the police and ran home to get me. I was terrified and in disbelief.
How? How did I not realize?
But the worst was yet to come.
Days after the incident, with the man already arrested, he was identified as a serial killer whose modus operandi was to enter the homes of his victims (usually women who live alone), hide in them, catch them off guard, rape and decapitate them.
As I saw this news in the newspaper, I was both horrified and relieved. Having said that, I started to look at my cell phone.
Then I remembered.
The photos I took that day.
Something in my head told me to look at those photos, and so I did.
It was there.
In the crack of my closet
With his bulging eyes, macabre smile, holding a shiny object that I later recognized as a knife.
The knocks, they never came from my bedroom door.
They were coming from my closet.
Then you ask me “so why are you in the hospital?”
After that day, I started having constant hallucinations.
I couldn’t stop seeing that grotesque face in the cracks of my house.
My outbursts got worse and worse, and I even attacked an unknown man on the street.
Now I’m hospitalized here.
I’m documenting this to maybe rationalize a little, or to serve as evidence.
Because I recently found out that he escaped from prison, and I can’t stop seeing him every night in the crack of my hospital bedroom door.
And now, i can hear it. Something from the hall.
knock, knock, knock
