AITA for 'leaving' my wife at the hospital while she's about to give birth to our son?
The title makes it sound really bad. Sorry English is not my first language. This is the best I could do to explain what happened.
So due to covid we've had some financial problems. But last year I started a new business with my friend and honestly it looks promising. Last week, my wife and I were having breakfast together when suddenly her water broke (a few weeks earlier than the due date). But we were fully prepared. So I drove her to the hospital.
The thing is, my friend and I were supposed to have an important meeting at our small office with someone who was interested in financing our start up that day as well. My friend isn't really a good talker and not very tech-savvy so he really needed me there to give a good presentation of our whole company and products. And the person we were supposed to meet also lives in another city so this might be our only chance to convince him to help us.
My wife told me to go anyway because she wasn't alone at the hospital and this was a very important meeting and could ensure our future. Her mother and sister were there with her. Honestly, I didn't want to miss the birth of my son so I had already called my friend and told him to go alone and maybe ask the guy if it's possible to arrange another meeting very soon.
But my wife still insisted I go. She said 'The baby will be here when you come back. But that person may not give us another chance." So I left the hospital and drove to the office. The meeting went really well and the guy seemed impressed. He told us he would come back to visit us again soon with his partner to talk about a business contract.
Later that day I drove back to the hospital to find my wife nursing our healthy and beautiful baby boy. I told her the good news about our meeting and she was ecstatic. But then MIL took me aside and told me off for leaving my wife. She called me a horrible person who cares more about my job than my wife and son. I should have stayed with her until the baby was born. And that got me thinking it did sound like I cared more about my business than my family. Am I The Asshole?
